Instagram Soft Blocking: What It Is, How to Do It, and How to Tell If It Happened to You

Instagram Soft Blocking: What It Is, How to Do It, and How to Tell If It Happened to You

A soft block is social media's version of a passive-aggressive exit. Instead of directly blocking someone — which feels confrontational and might lead to questions — you force them to unfollow you without them necessarily realizing what happened.

It's a real thing. People do it. And it's worth knowing both how it works and how to detect when it's been done to you.

What a Soft Block Actually Does

A soft block on Instagram involves blocking someone and then immediately unblocking them. The sequence matters:

When you block someone on Instagram, they're removed from your followers. When you then unblock them, they're still not following you — the unfollow sticks even after the block is removed. They can see your profile again (if it's public), but they're no longer in your followers list and would have to manually re-follow you.

The result: you've effectively removed someone from your followers list without them receiving any notification about it. Your follower count goes down by one, and from their perspective, they might not even notice immediately — especially if they don't regularly check their following list.

Why People Use It

Avoiding awkward conversations is the obvious reason. If an ex, a difficult coworker, or someone whose vibe has shifted follows you, directly unfollowing them or blocking them can lead to questions. The soft block achieves the same outcome (they're no longer in your audience) with less confrontation.

It's also used by accounts that want to remove followers without the drama — content creators who've shifted direction, professional accounts cleaning up their audience, anyone who wants fewer specific eyes on their content without making it a whole thing.

How to Do a Soft Block on Instagram

  1. Go to your followers list and find the account
  2. Tap their username to go to their profile
  3. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner
  4. Select "Block"
  5. Confirm the block
  6. Immediately go back to their profile (you can search for them)
  7. Tap the three dots again
  8. Select "Unblock"

Done. They've been removed from your followers silently. They can still see your public profile, but they're no longer following you.

How to Tell If Someone Soft Blocked You

This is where it gets interesting. The soft block is designed to be invisible — there's no notification, no obvious sign.

The most reliable detection method: compare two Instagram data exports over time. Download your Instagram data (Settings → Accounts Center → Download Your Information, JSON format, Followers and following only), upload to FollowCheck, and compare against a previous export. Anyone who appears in your old followers list but not the new one has either unfollowed you normally, or soft blocked you.

You can't definitively distinguish between a regular unfollow and a soft block from the data alone — both result in someone disappearing from your followers list. But if the person still has an active account (you can see their profile), you're still following them, and they're no longer following you... that's a soft block pattern.

The key signal: they're still on Instagram, you still follow them, but they no longer appear in your followers. A regular unfollow has the same signature, but the soft block is specifically associated with accounts that clearly made an intentional choice rather than account cleanup.

The Honest Take

If you've been soft blocked by someone, the message is reasonably clear even without explicit communication. They wanted you out of their audience without a direct conversation about it.

Whether that warrants any action is up to you. FollowCheck gives you the data. What you do with it — whether that's unfollowing them back, reaching out, or simply noting it and moving on — is your call.

The soft block is one of those Instagram behaviors that's more revealing than it's intended to be.
