The Instagram Account Audit I Run Every Quarter — And Why You Should Too
I started doing quarterly Instagram audits in late 2025. And I'll be honest — the first one was humbling. I thought I had a solid handle on my account. Turns out I was following 200 dead accounts, had a bio that hadn't been updated in eight months, and my engagement rate was way below the benchmark for my follower tier.
That first audit changed how I thought about the whole platform. Not because I found some magic growth hack, but because I finally saw the full picture instead of just staring at the follower number and hoping it would go up.
Here's the exact checklist I use. It takes about an hour. Do it once a quarter and you'll have more clarity about your Instagram strategy than 95% of creators.
Start With Your Profile (The Stuff You Set Up Once and Forgot About)
When's the last time you actually read your own bio? Not glanced at it — read it? Is it still accurate?
☐ Profile photo. Is it current? Clear? Recognizable at the tiny circular size Instagram displays it? For personal brands — a clean face shot. For businesses — your logo, not a photo of your product.
☐ Username. Same across all your platforms? If you're @sarahcreates on Instagram but @sarah_creates_ on TikTok, that's friction you don't need. People can't find you if your handle changes platform to platform.
☐ Display name. This is searchable — did you know that? Instagram allows 30 characters. "Sarah | Food Photography" is way more discoverable than just "Sarah." Use a keyword someone might actually search.
☐ Bio. Does it answer three questions within two lines? What you do, who it's for, what they should do next. If someone has to scroll to understand your account... rewrite it. Right now. Before you continue this checklist.
☐ Link in bio. Does it work? Is it pointing to the right thing? If you're using Linktree or something similar, when's the last time you checked that all the links inside it are actually live? I once discovered a Linktree link pointing to a page I'd taken down four months earlier. Embarrassing.
Follower Quality — This Is Where It Gets Real
Here's the part most people skip, and it's the most important section of the entire audit. Your follower count is a vanity metric. Your follower quality is what actually determines your reach.
☐ Download your Instagram data export. Settings → Accounts Center → Your Information and Permissions → Download Your Information → JSON format, Followers and following only. Wait 10-15 minutes for the file.
☐ Upload to FollowCheck. Go to followcheck.tech, upload the ZIP. Get your complete follower breakdown in about 30 seconds.
☐ Review your Non-Followers list. How many accounts are you following that don't follow you back? Be honest with yourself — are these accounts you genuinely enjoy watching, or are they follow-back attempts from 2023 that never worked out? If it's the latter, unfollow them gradually. 30-40 per day max.
☐ Review your Fans list. Everyone who follows you that you don't follow back. Scan for obvious bots — random character usernames, 5,000+ following with 30 followers, no posts. Remove the obvious fakes using Instagram's native "Remove Follower" option. Keep it to 15-20 removals per day to avoid action blocks.
☐ Calculate your engagement rate. Take the average likes + comments on your last 5 posts, divide by your follower count, multiply by 100. Under 1% and you've got an audience quality problem. Between 1-3% is normal for most account sizes. Over 3% and you're doing well.
I used to think engagement rate was just a number brands cared about. I was wrong — it's the number Instagram's algorithm cares about. Low engagement rate means the algorithm suppresses your content distribution. That's a whole other article, but it starts here.
Content Performance — What's Actually Working?
☐ Find your top 5 posts from the last 90 days — sorted by reach, not likes. Reach tells you how many unique people saw it. Likes tell you how many clicked a button. Reach is what matters. What format were these posts? Reels? Carousels? Single images? What topics? What time did you post them?
☐ Find your bottom 5 posts. What do they have in common? I noticed my worst performers were almost always single images posted on weekday mornings. Once I saw the pattern, I stopped doing that.
☐ Check your Reel completion rate. In Instagram Insights, look at average watch time versus video length. Under 30% means your hook isn't working. The first 3 seconds decide everything — if people aren't staying past that, the content after it doesn't matter.
☐ Check your best posting time. Instagram Insights → Total Followers → Most Active Times. Are you posting when your audience is actually online, or are you posting whenever it's convenient for you? These are rarely the same thing.
Security — The Five-Minute Check That Could Save Your Account
☐ Two-factor authentication. Is it on? Is it using an authenticator app (not just SMS)? SMS-based 2FA can be compromised through SIM swapping — that's not theoretical, it happens to creators regularly.
☐ Connected apps. Settings → Security → Apps and Websites. Any app you don't recognize? Any app you haven't used in months? Any app that required your Instagram login to show you follower data? Revoke access to all of them. That last category is a red flag — legitimate tools don't need your credentials.
☐ Login activity. Settings → Security → Login Activity. See any devices or locations you don't recognize? Change your password immediately and force log out of all sessions. Don't wait. Do it now.
Set 3 Goals for the Next 90 Days
Based on everything the audit surfaced, write down three specific goals. Not vague aspirational stuff like "grow my audience" — actual measurable targets.
Things like: "Remove 200 ghost followers at 20/day pace over the next 10 days." Or "Post 3 Reels per week for 12 consecutive weeks." Or "Improve engagement rate from 1.4% to 2.0% by cleaning up my follower list."
Put a date on each one. Set a reminder.
The accounts that grow consistently aren't the ones chasing every new trend. They're the ones who actually understand where they stand and make deliberate moves from there.
This checklist gives you the understanding. What happens next is on you.
