Instagram Following List Not Showing? Here's Why and How to Fix It
It's an annoying glitch when it happens. You go to your profile, tap "Following," and either the list is blank, it spins forever trying to load, or it shows a number that doesn't match what you actually follow. Sometimes it shows nothing at all.
This isn't a rare bug. It happens to a lot of people, across both iOS and Android, across different account types. The causes are usually straightforward, and most of them have simple fixes.
Reason 1: App Cache Issue
The most common cause of a following list that won't load is a corrupted or outdated cache in the Instagram app. Instagram stores a local copy of your following list to speed up loading — when that cached data gets corrupted or out of sync with the server, the list breaks.
Fix: Clear Instagram's app cache. On Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear Cache. On iPhone, there's no direct cache clear button — instead, delete the Instagram app and reinstall it. Your account data is stored on Instagram's servers, so you won't lose anything.
After clearing the cache, reopen Instagram, log back in if needed, and check your following list again.
Reason 2: Poor or Unstable Internet Connection
The following list loads from Instagram's servers each time you open it. If your connection is weak, slow, or drops mid-load, you'll get a blank or partially loaded list.
Fix: Switch from WiFi to mobile data (or vice versa) and try again. If you're on WiFi, try moving closer to the router or restarting it. The following list is not a massive file — it should load in under a second on a decent connection.
Reason 3: Instagram Server Issues
Sometimes Instagram's servers are having a bad day. Regional outages, maintenance windows, and unexpected load spikes can all cause various parts of the app to malfunction temporarily. The following list is one of the first things to break when server load is high.
Fix: Check Instagram's status on Downdetector or similar sites to see if others are reporting issues. If it's a server problem, wait 30–60 minutes and try again. There's nothing you can do on your end.
Reason 4: Outdated App Version
Instagram pushes frequent updates and occasionally deprecates older API endpoints that older app versions rely on. If you haven't updated the app in a while, some features — including the following list — may stop working properly.
Fix: Update Instagram through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). After updating, force-close and reopen the app.
Reason 5: Account-Level Restriction
If Instagram has placed an action block or account restriction on your account — usually due to suspected bot behavior or Terms of Service violations — some account features may be limited or broken. A restricted following list is one symptom.
Fix: Check whether you're experiencing an action block by trying to follow or unfollow someone. If you get an error message about unusual activity, you're blocked. Wait 24–72 hours for the block to lift naturally. If it persists, review Instagram's Community Guidelines and make sure nothing on your account triggered a flag.
When the In-App List Is Just Unreliable
Here's the thing: for a lot of account management tasks, the in-app following list is the wrong tool anyway. It doesn't let you export, search efficiently, or compare against your followers list. It's a display convenience, not an analysis tool.
The most reliable way to see your complete following list — regardless of app glitches — is through Instagram's data export. Request a JSON export (Settings → Accounts Center → Download Your Information), download the ZIP, and upload it to FollowCheck.
FollowCheck processes the complete following.json file from your export and shows you everyone you follow in a clean, searchable, filterable interface. It works whether or not your in-app list is loading correctly, because it doesn't depend on Instagram's app at all — it's reading your downloaded data file directly.
If the in-app list glitch is frustrating you, the data export method is both the workaround and the upgrade.
